The Vision - Executive Summary:
Declaring April 11 as Safe ePay Day
Proposing April 11 as Safe
ePay Day to mark UPI’s pilot launch on April 11, 2016, by NPCI with 21
banks, initiated by Dr. Raghuram G. Rajan in Mumbai. This initiative celebrates
UPI’s seamless integration of banking and merchant payments.
A Shell for Nature,
A Shield for Finance: Why I Celebrate May 23 and Dream of April 11
Every
year on May 23, the world comes together to “shellebrate” World
Turtle Day®, a movement that has, over 25 years, become a symbol of love,
resilience, and advocacy for some of Earth’s oldest and most gentle beings.
Sponsored
by the American Tortoise Rescue, this day reminds me that the slow and
steady still need urgent action—because turtles and tortoises are facing
disappearing habitats, climate impacts, and exploitation.
While I pause to honor their
ancient wisdom and reflect on my responsibility toward nature 🌱, another motivation
continues to grow inside me—a secure, safe digital world where humanity
moves forward without leaving its most vulnerable behind.
That’s why I’ve begun advocating
for April 11 to be declared Safe ePay Day—a global reminder that just as
we protect turtles’ habitats, we must also safeguard our digital financial
ecosystems. 💻🔒
🌍 Why the Turtle and the
Transaction Must Both Be Protected
In the digital realm, April 11,
2016, marked the pilot launch of India’s UPI (Unified Payments Interface)—a
fintech revolution that now processes over 14 billion transactions monthly.
This platform, powered by the
National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), has created financial
inclusion at a scale never seen before. It has helped small businesses
thrive, empowered individuals, and stitched a safer, faster payment highway
across urban and rural India.
But this digital empowerment must
be met with security and education, much like how conservation efforts
meet the environmental needs of turtles.
🐢 Just like turtles carry their
homes—protective shells—with them wherever they go, I believe our digital
financial lives must carry safe practices wherever our money moves.
🐢 25 Years of Turtle Triumphs, 10
Years of Digital Empowerment
As World Turtle Day® turns 25
this year, I see a reminder of what long-term commitment looks like:
- ✅
From shutting down illegal wildlife trafficking
- ✅ To
building global awareness through #Shellfies
- ✅ To
creating real policy change for species protection
Every win for turtles and
tortoises has been driven by human motivation—people who cared, who acted, who
didn’t wait for permission to make a difference. That’s the same spirit behind
my push for Safe ePay Day—not driven by profit, but by the belief in
a safer, fairer future for everyone using digital payments.
💡 Safe ePay Day: A Platform to
Inspire and Protect
Declaring April 11 as Safe
ePay Day isn’t just a calendar idea for me—it’s a personal movement with
four key motivations:
1. Celebrating
the Impact of UPI
Like World Turtle Day® celebrates ancient reptiles, I want Safe ePay Day to
celebrate UPI’s legacy of democratizing digital payments across India and
beyond 🌐.
2. Recognizing
Visionary Leadership
Just as Susan Tellem and Marshall Thompson launched ATR with passion for
tortoises, I recognize NPCI’s leadership and Reserve Bank of India guidance in
building a secure, scalable digital infrastructure. Safe ePay Day can be a
moment to honor their foresight and inspire future innovators.
3. Educating
and Empowering Digital Users
World Turtle Day® engages people of all ages with education and empathy. I
envision April 11 filled with workshops, webinars, and awareness efforts on digital
hygiene and cybersecurity best practices.
4. Fostering
a Global Digital Conservation Movement
As World Turtle Day® has gone global, so too can Safe ePay Day. UPI is already
expanding into countries like Singapore and Nepal. Like the International Day
of Yoga, I believe Safe ePay Day can become India’s gift to the world—a
symbol of trust, transparency, and tech for good.
💬 A Symbolic Parallel: Clean
Beaches, Clean Tech
World Turtle Day® calls for clean
beaches, free of plastic that harms marine life. In digital spaces, our
“plastic” is phishing scams, data breaches, and fraud. Just as people
clean beaches, I want to encourage digital cleanups—stronger passwords, device
updates, secure habits.
One protects the ocean’s future 🌊. The other protects your
financial future 💸.
🎉 How I Choose to Participate in
Both Movements
🌟 On May 23:
- I take part in raising awareness for turtles
and tortoises
- I support conservation groups like American
Tortoise Rescue
- I share and celebrate their legacy with
others
🌟 Looking Forward to April 11:
- I spread awareness about digital safety and
celebrate UPI’s transformative role
- I write, speak, and connect with people who
believe in secure, inclusive fintech
- I keep pushing until Safe ePay Day finds its
place on the global calendar
Because when conservation
meets cybersecurity, I realize something powerful:
🌐 Whether in nature or on the internet,
protection is love in action.
💫 Final Words: My Shared
Motivation
Turtles and tortoises didn’t
survive for over 200 million years by accident—they adapted, persisted, and
carried their protection with them. With Safe ePay Day, I hope we build a
digital world that is secure by design, resilient like a tortoise shell, and
open like the sea.
I’ll keep celebrating May 23
for the turtles.
And I’ll keep working toward April 11 for digital safety.
🛡️ Because
a world where turtles dance and e-payments are safe isn’t a fantasy— It’s a
motivation worth fighting for. 🐢💚💳
General Appeal –
Appeal to Declare April 11 as
Safe ePay Day
## A Heartfelt Call to Establish
Safe ePay Day
This appeal is driven by a deep
belief in the transformative power of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI)
and the urgent need to promote secure digital payments worldwide.
On April 11, 2016, UPI’s pilot
launch set the stage for a financial revolution, and as we approach its tenth
anniversary in 2026, we propose declaring April 11 as **Safe ePay Day**.
This initiative, with no personal
gain in mind, seeks to celebrate India’s fintech legacy while inspiring a
global movement for safe, inclusive e-payments. **Safe ePay Day** is not just a
celebration—it’s a call to action for a more secure digital future.
# Why
April 11 Deserves to Be ‘Safe ePay Day’
The pilot launch of UPI on April
11, 2016, by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) marked a turning
point in digital finance. Today, as of May 18, 2025, UPI processes over 14
billion transactions monthly, empowering millions with seamless, secure
payments. Declaring April 11 as **Safe ePay Day** honors this milestone and
provides a platform to emphasize the importance of cybersecurity in digital
transactions, ensuring that the benefits of fintech reach everyone safely.
## Four Key Reasons to Celebrate
Safe ePay Day
### 1. Celebrating UPI’s Legacy
Through Safe ePay Day
UPI has revolutionized financial
inclusion by enabling instant transactions via Virtual Payment Addresses or QR
codes, bridging urban-rural divides. From street vendors to entrepreneurs, UPI
has made digital payments accessible to all. **Safe ePay Day** on April 11
celebrates this legacy by highlighting how UPI’s secure framework empowers
millions, encouraging users to adopt safe practices to protect their financial
interactions and sustain this transformative impact.
### 2. Honoring NPCI’s Visionary
Leadership with Safe ePay Day
NPCI’s innovative design of UPI—a
real-time, interoperable platform—has made it a global benchmark, processing
billions of transactions annually while maintaining trust. By declaring April
11 as **Safe ePay Day**, we honor NPCI’s commitment to security and
scalability. **Safe ePay Day** can serve as a moment to recognize NPCI’s role
in building a reliable fintech ecosystem, inspiring further advancements in
secure payment technologies.
### 3. Promoting Secure Digital
Practices Through Safe ePay Day
With the rise of digital
payments, cybersecurity challenges like phishing and fraud have grown. **Safe
ePay Day** on April 11 provides a dedicated opportunity to educate individuals
and businesses on safe e-payment practices, such as using two-factor
authentication and verifying transaction details. By making **Safe ePay Day** a
global platform for awareness, we can ensure that digital payments remain a
safe and trusted tool for financial empowerment.
### 4. Inspiring a Global
Movement with Safe ePay Day
UPI’s success has inspired
international adoption in countries like Nepal, Singapore, and Peru, showcasing
its potential as a model for global payment systems. Declaring April 11 as
**Safe ePay Day** can ignite a worldwide movement, encouraging other nations to
develop secure, inclusive digital payment systems. Like the International Day
of Yoga, **Safe ePay Day** can position India as a fintech leader, fostering
international collaboration to ensure safe e-payments for all.
## A Vision for Safe ePay Day on
April 11
We envision **Safe ePay Day** on
April 11 as a global celebration of secure digital payments. Communities can
host workshops on cybersecurity, businesses can offer incentives for safe
e-payment practices, and schools can educate students on the role of technology
in financial safety. As we approach UPI’s tenth anniversary in 2026, let’s
establish **Safe ePay Day** as a day to reflect on UPI’s impact and commit to a
future where every transaction is secure and inclusive.
## Call to
Action
I urge
governments, financial institutions, businesses, and communities worldwide to
join hands in declaring April 11 as **Safe ePay Day**.
Let’s
celebrate UPI’s milestone by making **Safe ePay Day** a global movement for
secure, innovative fintech.
Together, we
can build a future where financial access is universal, and every e-payment is
safe—starting with **Safe ePay Day** in 2026.
