In observance of the International Day of the Markhor (May 24) and in support of April 11 as Safe ePay Day
The Vision - Executive Summary: Declaring April 11 as Safe
ePay Day
Proposing April 11 as Safe ePay Day to mark UPI’s pilot launch
on April 11, 2016, by NPCI with 21 banks, initiated by Dr. Raghuram G. Rajan in
Mumbai. This initiative celebrates UPI’s seamless integration of banking and
merchant payments.
May 24 marks the International Day of the Markhor, a United
Nations Observance, a tribute to one of the world’s most resilient and majestic
mountain goats. With its iconic spiral horns and unmatched agility, the Markhor
symbolizes balance, awareness, and survival in harsh terrains. Once critically
endangered, its inspiring comeback highlights the power of conservation and
community action. On this day, we celebrate not just a species — but a spirit
of perseverance and harmony with nature.
On May 24, we honor a creature few have seen up close
but whose symbolism speaks volumes — the Markhor. Agile, majestic, and
vigilant, the Markhor thrives in some of the most treacherous terrains on
Earth. To me, it represents not only survival, but a philosophy of movement:
every step deliberate, every pause meaningful, every ascent earned.
As someone advocating to declare April 11 as Safe ePay Day,
I find profound lessons in the Markhor’s way of life. The digital payment
ecosystem is a different kind of mountainscape — complex, full of promise, yet
riddled with hidden risks. Like the Markhor, we must navigate it with clarity,
confidence, and care.
🐐 Who is
the Markhor, Really?
The Markhor — whose name is said to mean "snake
eater" — is a large, spiral-horned wild goat that lives at altitudes of up
to 11,000 feet in mountainous regions. It is the master of vertical survival,
using both instinct and precision to scale rocky cliffs and avoid predators.
Its corkscrew horns can grow over five feet long, and its eyes hold a quiet
intelligence born from a life of constant alertness.
Once listed as endangered, the Markhor’s numbers have
rebounded, thanks in part to community-led conservation efforts. Its
recovery is now considered a rare success story in wildlife protection — a
testament to what is possible when local wisdom, government action, and global
awareness converge.
But its story is not just biological. It’s philosophical.
In the Markhor, I see a powerful metaphor for our digital age:
survival through awareness, resilience, and a deep respect for
risk.
🧗 Lessons
from the Markhor for Digital Finance
1. Balance
Over Speed
The Markhor moves gracefully but never carelessly. In our world of instant
payments, speed often overshadows caution. Whether you're scanning a QR code or
entering an OTP, let’s remember: safety is a deliberate act.
2. Elevation
Without Isolation
Despite its lofty habitat, the Markhor’s comeback has been a collective
achievement. In digital finance too, success must be inclusive — from urban
professionals to remote villages, from seasoned fintech users to the digitally
hesitant.
3. Grace
Under Pressure
The Markhor faces harsh conditions daily — just as modern payment platforms
face relentless threats from fraud, malware, and cybercrime. Resilience lies
not in fearlessness, but in being prepared.
🔐 April
11: A Day for Safe ePayments
The parallels don’t end there. Just as we celebrate the
Markhor on May 24, I propose that we recognize another milestone — the pilot
launch of UPI on April 11, 2016 — by declaring it as Safe ePay Day.
UPI’s journey has been no less astonishing. From a simple
digital rail, it has evolved into a financial lifeline for millions, processing
over 14 billion transactions each month (as of May 2025). But with scale
comes responsibility. The risks grow too — from phishing scams to fake payment
links to identity theft.
That’s why I’m advocating to declare April 11 as Safe ePay
Day — not just to celebrate innovation, but to institutionalize
awareness, much like wildlife days bring attention to ecological balance.
🧭 From
Cliffs to Clouds: A Shared Journey
Both the Markhor and the digital economy teach us this: The
climb is only worth it when it's safe.
Today, as we honor a species that defied extinction through
vigilance, I call upon financial leaders, regulators, technologists, and global
citizens to heed the same message: digital empowerment without digital safety
is an illusion. We must work together to build systems where every
transaction is trusted, just as every step of the Markhor is secure.
🙏 Final
Thoughts: Why This Matters to Me
This isn’t just an idea. It’s personal. I’ve seen how UPI has
changed lives — mine included. But I’ve also seen the emotional and financial
toll of fraud and misinformation.
So, as I celebrate May 24 — International Day of the
Markhor, I also reaffirm my appeal to recognize April 11 as Safe ePay
Day. The two are not separate to me. One is about preserving natural
balance. The other is about preserving digital trust.
And both, at their heart, are about responsibility.
Appeal to Declare April 11 as Safe ePay Day
## A Heartfelt Call to Establish
Safe ePay Day
This appeal is driven by a deep
belief in the transformative power of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI)
and the urgent need to promote secure digital payments worldwide.
On April 11, 2016, UPI’s pilot
launch set the stage for a financial revolution, and as we approach its tenth
anniversary in 2026, we propose declaring April 11 as **Safe ePay Day**.
This initiative, with no personal
gain in mind, seeks to celebrate India’s fintech legacy while inspiring a
global movement for safe, inclusive e-payments. **Safe ePay Day** is not just a
celebration—it’s a call to action for a more secure digital future.
# Why
April 11 Deserves to Be ‘Safe ePay Day’
The pilot launch of UPI on April
11, 2016, by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) marked a turning
point in digital finance. Today, as of May 18, 2025, UPI processes over 14
billion transactions monthly, empowering millions with seamless, secure
payments. Declaring April 11 as **Safe ePay Day** honors this milestone and
provides a platform to emphasize the importance of cybersecurity in digital
transactions, ensuring that the benefits of fintech reach everyone safely.
## Four Key Reasons to Celebrate
Safe ePay Day
### 1. Celebrating UPI’s Legacy
Through Safe ePay Day
UPI has revolutionized financial
inclusion by enabling instant transactions via Virtual Payment Addresses or QR
codes, bridging urban-rural divides. From street vendors to entrepreneurs, UPI
has made digital payments accessible to all. **Safe ePay Day** on April 11
celebrates this legacy by highlighting how UPI’s secure framework empowers
millions, encouraging users to adopt safe practices to protect their financial
interactions and sustain this transformative impact.
### 2. Honoring NPCI’s Visionary
Leadership with Safe ePay Day
NPCI’s innovative design of UPI—a
real-time, interoperable platform—has made it a global benchmark, processing
billions of transactions annually while maintaining trust. By declaring April
11 as **Safe ePay Day**, we honor NPCI’s commitment to security and
scalability. **Safe ePay Day** can serve as a moment to recognize NPCI’s role
in building a reliable fintech ecosystem, inspiring further advancements in
secure payment technologies.
### 3. Promoting Secure Digital
Practices Through Safe ePay Day
With the rise of digital
payments, cybersecurity challenges like phishing and fraud have grown. **Safe
ePay Day** on April 11 provides a dedicated opportunity to educate individuals
and businesses on safe e-payment practices, such as using two-factor
authentication and verifying transaction details. By making **Safe ePay Day** a
global platform for awareness, we can ensure that digital payments remain a
safe and trusted tool for financial empowerment.
### 4. Inspiring a Global
Movement with Safe ePay Day
UPI’s success has inspired
international adoption in countries like Nepal, Singapore, and Peru, showcasing
its potential as a model for global payment systems. Declaring April 11 as
**Safe ePay Day** can ignite a worldwide movement, encouraging other nations to
develop secure, inclusive digital payment systems. Like the International Day
of Yoga, **Safe ePay Day** can position India as a fintech leader, fostering
international collaboration to ensure safe e-payments for all.
## A Vision for Safe ePay Day on
April 11
We envision **Safe ePay Day** on
April 11 as a global celebration of secure digital payments. Communities can
host workshops on cybersecurity, businesses can offer incentives for safe
e-payment practices, and schools can educate students on the role of technology
in financial safety. As we approach UPI’s tenth anniversary in 2026, let’s
establish **Safe ePay Day** as a day to reflect on UPI’s impact and commit to a
future where every transaction is secure and inclusive.
## Call to
Action
I urge
governments, financial institutions, businesses, and communities worldwide to
join hands in declaring April 11 as **Safe ePay Day**.
Let’s
celebrate UPI’s milestone by making **Safe ePay Day** a global movement for
secure, innovative fintech.
Together, we
can build a future where financial access is universal, and every e-payment is
safe—starting with **Safe ePay Day** in 2026.
